How to Care for Your Newly Tinted Windows

Everything you need to know about maintaining your window tint, from drying times to cleaning methods.

Congratulations on your new window tint! Whether you’ve just had your car, home, or office windows tinted, proper care during the first few weeks is essential to ensure a long-lasting, bubble-free finish. Here’s our complete guide to looking after your newly tinted windows.

The Curing Period

After installation, your window tint needs time to cure. During this period, the adhesive bonds fully with the glass. In Cairns’ tropical climate, this process typically takes 3 to 5 days for automotive tint and up to 30 days for thicker residential or commercial films.

During the curing period, you may notice small water bubbles or a slightly hazy appearance. This is completely normal and will clear up as the film dries. Don’t be tempted to poke or squeeze these bubbles – they will disappear on their own.

When to Start Cleaning

The golden rule: wait at least 3 to 5 days before cleaning your tinted windows. For residential and commercial installations, we recommend waiting at least 2 weeks. Cleaning too early can interfere with the curing process and may cause the film to shift or bubble.

What to Use

  • A soft, clean microfibre cloth
  • Mild soapy water or a dedicated tint-safe cleaner
  • A soft rubber squeegee (for larger windows)

What to Avoid

  • Ammonia-based cleaners (like Windex) – these can break down the film
  • Abrasive pads or paper towels – they can scratch the tint
  • Razor blades or sharp scrapers near the film edges
  • Pressure washers directly on the tinted surface

Long-Term Care Tips

Once your tint has fully cured, maintenance is straightforward. Here are our top tips for keeping your tint looking great for years:

  1. Clean regularly – Regular gentle cleaning prevents dirt buildup that can scratch the film over time.
  2. Use tint-safe products – Always check that your glass cleaner is ammonia-free. Many automotive cleaning brands offer tint-safe formulations.
  3. Be gentle with window mechanisms – For car tint, wait at least 48 hours before rolling windows up and down to allow the edges to set.
  4. Watch for edge peeling – If you notice any peeling at the edges, contact us promptly. Early intervention can often save a repair.
  5. Avoid stickers and suction cups – Placing and removing adhesive items on tinted windows can damage the film.

Signs Something Isn’t Right

While quality tint installed by professionals should last for many years, here are signs that something may need attention:

  • Bubbles that appear after the curing period has passed
  • Purple or faded discolouration (a sign of cheap dye-based film)
  • Peeling at edges or corners
  • Cracking or flaking of the film surface

If you notice any of these issues with tint installed by Classical Tint, get in touch with us. Our work is backed by manufacturer warranties and we stand behind every installation.

Why Quality Film Matters

At Classical Tint, we exclusively use premium 3-ply films from brands like LLumar. These films are specifically designed for harsh conditions and won’t fade, bubble, or peel like cheaper alternatives. It’s one of the reasons we’ve been trusted in Cairns for over 37 years.
